Gastric Lap Band Surgery vs Virtual Lap Band Hypnotherapy

To begin with, we can all agree that diets suck and usually do not work beyond the short term.  That’s kind of a given.  Almost anyone can hold fast to the regime required for a short time, but it doesn’t work in the long term.  The diet plans are too restrictive… or even worse, completely deprive us of our favorite foods.  For a short time, we can lose ourselves in a trance of counting calories or consciously measuring portions sizes and become numb to the deprivation.  It can make us even more obsessed with our eating than we were before the diet began. This can take all pleasure out of eating and can even lead us to want more of certain foods… and a diet-overeat/binge cycle can start.  Or, after you lose the 20 or 30 pounds, you can be amazed at how quickly it returns… with friends, other fat cells you didn’t have before.

So, we give a big, “Boo”, to diets.  We’ve all heard the line that anything with the word “die” in it can’t be good.  Personally, I’ve only heard that from overweight people.  Not sure if that is relevant.  Anyway, huge Boo to diets!

Especially, Boo to yo-yo dieting patterns! The worse on our body and our mind!

Even the diet food advertised so often on TV is torture.  I’m told it, “tastes as though they spread fourth generation peanut butter on a piece of cardboard and tell you it’s a meal”.  Ha.

So, “Boo to that, too”.

One more thing, diets do not address the emotional aspect of the weight gain in the first place, which only ensures the symptom will continue.  With most people, excess weight is a symptom of a deeper issue and I’ll discuss that, later.

I’m going to address the issue as it relates to anyone considered obese based on their BMI (Body Mass Index), which is about 68% of the U.S. population.

(NOTE: You can easily check your own BMI online, through your browser).

The obese are the majority in this country and they are who this article is primarily intended for… the rest of you can probably do with generic hypnotherapy do address your difficulties with weight management. Give me a call at (208) 262-8128.

Gastric Lap Band Surgery: A Risky Procedure that Doesn’t Solve the Underlying Problem

To begin with, this is considered major surgery.  All forms of weight-loss surgery can pose serious risks and side effects and can include excessive bleeding, infections, and other difficulties.  You usually need to be 100 pounds or more overweight, with a BMI of 40 or above.  The surgery involves having an inflatable band surgically placed around the top portion of the stomach.  This creates a smaller stomach pouch, meaning eating less will make a person feel full and satisfy their hunger.  In some cases, i.e. sleeve gastrectomy, about 80% of the stomach is removed to create a smaller stomach pouch.

Recovery time from these procedures varies from patient to patient.  But it could take months for a patient to resume their normal daily activities following surgery, and many will have to follow a liquid diet and introduce normal foods slowly.

The most common post-operation and side effects are:

  • Acid reflux (this is highly common)
  • Anesthesia-related risks
  • Chronic nausea and vomiting
  • Inability to eat certain foods
  • Infection
  • Obstruction of stomach
  • Weight gain or failure to lose weight.

It also carries some long-term risks for patients, including:

  • “Dumping syndrome”, a condition that can lead to symptoms like nausea and dizziness.
  • Low Blood Sugar
  • Malnutrition
  • Vomiting
  • Ulcers
  • Bowel obstruction
  • Hernias

I have worked with clients who failed the lap band surgery and many of them suffered several of the effects listed above.

However, I have known several patients who “cheated” and simply liquefied chocolate for their chocolate Jones.  That band didn’t get in their way.  (And, I think that’s the point).  None of these people actually released much weight as a consequence.  In two cases, the people came to Engle Hypnotherapy for the Virtual Lap Band.  In each case, the patient said, “they fixed me down here (pointing to the stomach), but they didn’t fix me up here (pointing to head).”  So, the surgery doesn’t do much good without the emotional healing.  Childhood traumas will drive you to liquefy chocolate, if necessary.

I would recommend that you take great care in considering your options before taking such a major surgical step.  I don’t think that 80% of your removed stomach grows back should you change your mind.  Just saying.

Why Virtual Lap Band Hypnosis is a Better Alternative

To begin with, there is NO surgery involved.  We work with your mind, we don’t surgically change your body.  There’s no time off work required for “recovery”.  To be frank, it has been my experience that Virtual Gastric Band has a higher success rate (90% in my practice) than the actual surgery and the cost is about 10% of the surgery.

The Virtual Lap Band is a non-surgical technique using advanced hypnosis to convince your subconscious that you’ve had a band inserted in your stomach. We train the subconscious to be more aware of when you’re actually satisfied and don’t need to finish everything on your plate.  That old recording of, “Eat everything on your plate young lady/man” has been replaced with positive feelings and relaxed comfort.

At Engle Hypnotherapy we use a holistic approach: mind/body, not simply body.  Emotional eating is at the core of most obese people.  They don’t eat because they want to get heavy, they eat because they’re stressed, or bored, or even reacting to childhood traumas. Much of the time in hypnotherapy is spent in exploring the emotional aspects of your eating and the healing of those aspects.  It makes you feel lighter to release these burdens.  It gives you increased self-confidence and self-esteem.  You begin to love yourself in a natural way, again.

Remember, this process allows you to be satisfied with much smaller amounts of food.  You are NOT restricted by food and you don’t have to eat prepared cardboard-meals.  You simply feel satisfied and you do not want any more.  In hypnotherapy, we help you to permanently change your eating and lifestyle habits.  I do this by communicating directly with your subconscious mind, where all your habits and unconscious thought patterns are stored.

This program is not a short-term fix.  It allows you to eat what you want but in smaller portions.  This means you won’t feel deprived and consequently gives you a long-term solution to weight control.

The basic Virtual Lap Band program is five sessions: one 2 hour session to begin with and then four 1 hour sessions.  You’ll have my personal attention.  You will have recordings to listen to (13 minutes) and limited homework to do. I have hypnotized over 10,000 people and have completed over two hundred virtual lap bands.  My success rate on Skype duplicates my in-office success rate and can be done in the comfort of your home or office.

So, in conclusion… my review opinion is Lap Band Surgery, two thumbs down!  Virtual Lap Band, two thumbs and one foot up!
